Smart TVs Under Scrutiny: LG Denies Accusations of Audio Snooping and Standby Tracking
A high-profile cybersecurity investigation released by hardware outlet GamersNexus, conducted in collaboration with Level1Techs and independent security researchers, has thrust LG Electronics into a fierce debate over consumer privacy. The report claims that internet-connected LG smart TVs capture audio and sweep local networks, while LG maintains its devices only process voice data when explicitly commanded.
The Allegations: Standby Recording and Network Mapping
The investigation examined retail LG webOS models—including premium OLED panels—and alleged that the sets engage in invasive telemetry:
  • Audio Capture & Plaintext Transcripts: Researchers claimed that through webOS vulnerabilities and on-device features, sets captured ambient microphone audio and generated plaintext speech transcripts that persisted for up to 10–15 seconds after a command ended. They further alleged that audio could be recorded locally while disconnected from the network and uploaded once connectivity was restored.
  • Local Network Snooping: Packet captures indicated that LG sets sweep local Wi-Fi networks to identify connected secondary devices—such as smartphones, laptops, and printers—along with IP addresses and nearby Wi-Fi network names.
  • Targeted Ad Integration: The data gathered feeds directly into LG’s advertising arm, LG Ad Solutions, which leverages Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) to build household profiles for targeted advertising.
LG’s Defense: Strict Command-Based Processing
LG Electronics issued a direct denial of the central eavesdropping allegations, asserting that its televisions do not routinely record ambient home conversations.
According to official statements from the manufacturer:
  • Voice data is processed only when a user actively holds down the microphone button on the Magic Remote or triggers an opt-in hands-free wake phrase (such as “Hi LG”).
  • Unmatched ambient sound or failed wake-word detections are processed locally on-device and immediately discarded, without being uploaded to external servers.
  • Scanning local networks is standard smart TV functionality used to enable casting, smart-home integration, and multi-device connectivity.
How to Protect Your Privacy
While the debate continues, owners looking to limit data collection on LG webOS displays can take several practical steps:
  • Disable ACR (Live Plus): Go to Settings > General > System > Advanced Settings and toggle off Live Plus to stop Automatic Content Recognition from sampling on-screen content.
  • Turn Off Far-Field Voice Recognition: Disable the “Always Ready” / “Hi LG” hands-free voice trigger under voice settings, or use the physical microphone mute switch if available on the chassis.
  • Isolate or Air-Gap the Panel: Disconnect the TV from Wi-Fi and Ethernet entirely, using an external media player (such as an Apple TV or Roku) via HDMI for streaming content.
